A Different Kind of Christmas Gift

This year, I decided to do something unconventional for Christmas. Instead of the usual gadgets or gift cards, I gave my family a gift that could truly impact their lives: personalized health assessment reports.

Why Health Assessment Reports?

Most people only pay attention to their health when faced with a scare. I wanted to shift the paradigm for my family. My goal was to encourage proactive health management rather than reactive measures.

Christmas provided us with the perfect opportunity:

  • Time to read slowly
  • Time to process without stress
  • Time to ask questions
  • Time to discuss trade-offs

The Flaw in New Year’s Resolutions

A common pitfall of New Year’s resolutions is that they often begin with motivation rather than data. Motivation is fleeting, while data is a constant. By providing health reports, I aimed to turn vague aspirations like "get healthier" into measurable targets.

What Was Inside the Reports?

Each family member received a structured overview of their health that included:

  • Biomarkers across major systems
  • Indicators of what is optimal, suboptimal, and out of range
  • Top priorities to address first
  • Potential drivers behind their results
  • An action plan focusing on nutrition, movement, and sleep

This approach was devoid of shame, fear, or overwhelm—just a clear plan.

Changing the Conversation

The moment we started discussing the reports, the dynamic shifted. Instead of arguing about diets and trends, we focused on:

  • Key areas to prioritize
  • Small changes that can make a significant impact
  • What to retest and when
  • The support each person needs

This transformation made health feel much more practical and achievable.

Framing the Information

I emphasized three key points to my family:

  1. This is information, not a label.
  2. You don't need to change everything at once.
  3. Pick one or two priorities and build momentum.

By providing this framework, I hoped to instill a sense of clarity and direction.

Setting Up for the New Year

With these reports, my family's resolutions now begin with:

  • A baseline understanding of their health
  • A priority list to focus on
  • Clear targets to aim for
  • A timeline to track progress

If your goal is to truly help someone you love, consider giving them clarity. Health is personal, and therefore, the plan should be too.

In a world filled with quick fixes and fleeting trends, let’s focus on what truly matters: understanding, planning, and taking actionable steps towards a healthier future.
